The Romans had respect for the Greek s architectural traditions, order, and design. The Romans were innovators that had the adaptability to use and improve existing techniques as well as new and existing material to create some of the most famous architectural structures like the temple, triumphal arch, and amphitheater. As time advanced so did the society needs of the Romans and with the support of state funds they were able to create great architectural structures many of which are still present today. Another great example of how the Romans wanted the structures to have a traditional feel is on the walls of the Colosseum, were the columns are attached to the walls and floors as decoration. You can also recognize the Greek influence on Roman architecture in buildings such as the Roman baths, where the first evidenced bath was located in Magna Garcia established by the Greek colonies. During the Augustan period there was a outpouring of new buildings that included the use of finer materials like marble. The buildings also advanced in design and size. In that time Roman buildings were considered strong and superior to any other architectural structure across the Empire. The Romans were able to take ideas such as bath structures, arches, and domes, push them to their fullest potential in design. George Elton Mayo Essay Elton Mayo was born in Adelaide, South Australia on 26 December 1880 and died in Guildford, Surrey on 1 September 1949. He was the second child of a respected colonial family; his father was a civil engineer, and his mother Henrietta Mary nee Donaldson was devoted to her childrens education and success. Elton was expected to follow his grandfather into medicine, but failed at university studies and was sent to Britain. Here he turned to writing, wrote on Australian politics for the Pall Mall Gazette and taught at the Working Mens College in London. He then returned to Australia to work in an Adelaide publishing business where his radical management practices were not appreciated. He returned to university and became the most brilliant student of the philosopher Sir William Mitchell, won prizes for scholarship and in 1912 was appointed a foundation lecturer in philosophy and education at the newly established university in Queensland. Here he married Dorothea McConnel, who had been ed ucated in landscape art at the Sorbonne and frequently visited Europe. They had two daughters, Patricia Elton Mayo, who would follow her fathers management thinking and had an interesting sociological career, and Ruth, who became a British artist and novelist and took the name Gael Elton Mayo. Mayo taught philosophy, ethics, metaphysics, economics, education and the new psychology of Freud, Jung and especially Pierre Janet. From the beginning he trained himself in public speaking, and became an outstanding lecturer. He spoke at Workers Education Association classes and tutorials, and addressed unions and professional bodies. He much impressed Bronislaw Malinowski when they met in 1914, and they became good friends. During the First World War he served on government bodies, advised on the organization of work for the war effort, wrote and lectured on industrial and political psychology and psychoanalysis, and contributed a lively piece (Mayo and Booth 1916) to Lady Galways Belgium Book. He was made a professor of philosophy in his universitys reorganization after the war. With a young Brisbane doctor, Thomas R.H. Matthewson, who had sought advice on the management of patients suffering war neurosis, Mayo refined his clinical skills in psychotherapy. He began to apply his ob servations on Matthewsons patients, and the ideas of the new psychology to political and industrial problems and political agitators (Trahair 1981, 1982). He felt he could trace societys ills to psychological causes (Bourke 1982). Mayo applied unsuccessfully for a directorship of adult education at the University of Melbourne, and went there to lecture on psychoanalysis before taking sabbatical leave to Britain in 1922. He intended to visit the United States on his way to the UK to work with a medical scholar at Oxford. However, from the moment he landed in San Francisco he was sought as a speaker on many social psychological topics, attracted the attention of industrialists and industrial psychologists for his thoughts on psychological causes of industrial unrest, and readily explained Americas industrial problems by reference to understandable irrationalities among workers, the poor skills of managers and the inhuman conditions of work that made for an insane society (Mayo 1919, 1922a, 1922b). When his university refused to extend Mayos unpaid sabbatical leave, it forced his resignation. Destitute in the United States, he vigorously sought help from those who had led him to believe there was support readily available for his ideas and industrial research plans. Unexpectedly, he was promised an income for six months by the philanthropist John D. Rockefeller, and given a temporary post at the University of Pennsylvania in 1923. There he researched the value of rest pauses on worker productivity in various textile firms. In one study he introduced regular pauses from the back-breaking work in a cotton-spinning mill and saw improvements in worker productivity. The practice was assiduously opposed by the foremen who, when Mayo was absent from the plant, returned workers to past practices. The effect of their intervention was a dramatic fall in productivity, thus illustrating the effectiveness of Mayos rest pauses. Mayo drew attention to this quasi-experiment to support his view on the value of treating employees humanely. What Is the Significance of Grading Sysytem Essay With the implementation of the K to 12 Basic Education Program, the traditional numerical values in the report cards of students will no longer appear. Instead, the Department of Education (DepEd) will be using a new grading system to assess and rate learning outcomes of students in public elementary and high schools. Effective this school year, DepEd said parents and student will no longer see numbers in the report cards of students from Grades 1 to 10. Based on DepEd Order No. 31, Series of 2012, or the â€Å"Policy Guidelines on the Implementation of Grades 1 to 12 Basic Education Curriculum (BEC) Effective School Year 2012-2013,† Education Secretary Armin Luistro ordered public schools to implement the K to 12 BEC, particularly on Grades 1 and 7 which will be most affected by the new curriculum, and challenged schools â€Å"to implement the guidelines in creative and innovative ways for the curriculum can be localized without compromising the philosophy of total learner d evelopment. † â€Å"The new grading system seeks to measure the students’ level of proficiency at the end of each quarter,† Luistro said. â€Å"The assessment process is holistic and aims to ensure the quality of student learning with emphasis on formation and development,† he explained. DepEd, Luistro said, â€Å"will also release another separate order with more details on the new rating system.† In the new grading system, letter â€Å"A† will reflect as highest the grade; letter â€Å"P† as second highest; and letter â€Å"B† as the lowest. Luistro explained that the letters actually represent â€Å"levels of proficiency as abbreviated†. To rate the learning outcome of students, teachers will be giving a grade â€Å"A† (â€Å"Advanced†) to students with 90 percent and above rating; â€Å"P† (â€Å"Proficient†) to students with 85 to 89 percent rating; â€Å"AP† (â€Å"Approaching Proficiency†) to s tudents with 80 to 84 percent rating; â€Å"D† (â€Å"Developing†) to students with 75 to 79 percent rating and â€Å"B† (â€Å"Beginning†) to students with 74 percent and below rating. Luistro said that teachers will still measure students’ progress with numerical values, but their letter equivalents above will be used in report cards â€Å"so that the focus will be less on competition and more on achieving standards of learning.† At the end of the quarter, Luistro explained that the performance of students shall be described in the report card based on the level of proficiency. When the teacher gives â€Å"B† it means that the student â€Å"struggles with his/her understanding; pre-requisite and fundamental knowledge and/or skills have not been required or developed adequately to aid understanding.† Students given with â€Å"D† are those that â€Å"possess the minimum knowledge and skills and core understandings but needs the help throughout the performance of authentic tasks† while those given â€Å"AP† are students that have â€Å"developed the fundamental knowledge and skills and core understandings and with little guidance from teacher and/or with some assistance from peers, can transfer these understandings through authentic performance tasks.† Those that are given â€Å"P† are students that have â€Å"developed fundamental knowledge and skills and core understandings and can transfer them independently through authentic performance tasks† while students given with â€Å"A† are those that â€Å"exceeds the core requirements in terms of knowledge, skills, and understandings and can transfer them automatically and flexible through authentic performance tasks.† Luistro said that the assessment process to be used is holistic, with emphasis on the formative or developmental purpose of quality assuring student learning. â€Å"It is also standards-based as it seeks to ensure that teachers will teach to the standards and students will aim to meet or even exceed the standards,† he added. Luistro added that student performance will still be assessed at four levels, including Knowledge with 15 percent; Process or Skills with 25%; Understanding with 30%; and Products/Performances with 30 % with a total of 100%. The results of the student’s performance, Luistro added, will be summed up based on these levels to come up with a numerical value. â€Å"The corresponding level of proficiency will appear on the report card at the end of the quarter,† he explained. At the end of the four quarters, Luistro explained that the Final Grade for each learning are shall be reported as â€Å"average of the four quarterly ratings, expressed in terms of the levels of proficiency.† Also, he said that â€Å"the general average will be computed based on the final grades of the different learning areas, and will be expressed in terms of the levels of proficiency with the numerical equivalent shall appear in parenthesis.† Luistro also stressed that promotion and retention of students shall be by subject meaning those students whose proficiency level is â€Å"B† at the end of the quarter or grading period â€Å"shall be required to undergo remediation classes† after class hours so that they can immediately catch up as they move to the next grading period. â€Å"If by the end of the school year, the students are still at the ‘B’ level, then they shall be required to take summer classes,† he said. Meanwhile, some parents and students – particularly those who are grade-conscious – expressed reservation to the new grading system. Conegundo Garganta called on the DepEd to look into the possibility of using idle buildings as a way of addressing classroom shortage. The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck Essay -- farm, tractors, land own

The bright colors and nice shirts all grab your attention at the store, but how did the cotton, grain, or wheat in the products come to be? In Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath, mechanization brings capitalism and other unintended consequences, leads to the decision for land owners of whether to run a business using greed or virtue, and separates the working class. Steinbeck starts The Grapes of Wrath by showing the Joad family who had just been removed from their farm. The Joads are one family of a monstrous number of families to be removed from their farms. They were raised on the land, some died on the land, and they were with approximately seven million families that lived on farms in the same day (â€Å"U.S. AGRICULTURAL POLICY,† 10). The banks told the Farmers’ Association to lower the overhead of all agricultural products by employing possibly one or two men to take the place of sixteen other men. The owner of the land had the choice to both get rich and be extremely wealthy by profiting off the loss and pain of others or to become one who is taken advantage of and becoming hungry and poor. One of the main unintended consequences of employing one man to drive the tractor was a loss of contact to the land. The land owners became completely separated from their land. The people who farmed in the same way as the Joads lived for the land, and they lived because of the land. This relationship between farmer and land was destroyed due to the introduction of the tractor to the land. Land owners no longer knew when they needed to give the land a break, and for this reason many pieces of land became totally dust and truly became unformidable to any type of farming. This overuse of the land led to what we know as the Dust B... ...reed which totally annihilated the working class’s bond of unity. If the working class had united maybe they would not have been so very miserable for such a long time. Maybe the Dustbowl would have never happened. Creating a Healthy City Environmental health should be a great concern for each individual person as well as our nation and the whole world. Environmental health addresses all the physical, chemical, and biological factors affecting health and our environment. t which includes air, land and water. Environmental health extents to the chemical we use such as BPA and the effects it can and may have on our children, fuel in the economy and additional sources of fuel, building green, environmental disease and sources of energy in which all of these items can have an effect on the environment and our health.Here are other aspect of environment health that I would have never consider to be part of our concern or environment; but have just as of an impact as anything else. Bioterrorism warfare is critical because without the governments’ prevention and methods many of us could be affected by chemical warfare. This weapon can kill and destroy our very lives. Buying locally is another e xpect of environmental heath that is critical to our community is buying our food locally from farmers and growers in our area. This is a great benefit of knowing more about where your food comes from.It so much more too environmental health in which I do not have the time to discuss. One major item is creating a healthy environment in our communities and cities to help established a better life. Once the plan has been established and implemented it’s important to monitor and evaluate by incorporating views from all groups within the community.These are critical steps in making the city environmental healthy. In order for Stockbridge to become a healthy city it will require some planning just to implement small changes and goals first then move to larger objectives. One area in which Stockbridge can begin is just to begin implementing a recycling plan. In large cities such as New York they have trash pickup and recycle pickup. Trash has to be divided into two categories. This is something that is a small goal for Stockbridge to introduction to the community.This is a small start but it’s a big change tha t can help to established or start the process of a healthy environment in the city. Beginning someone where is a start to healthy living. Having a health city will cost money and time. Money will needed to be generated in order for us to have the community in which we want or deserve to have. Producing a plan is one thing; but have the money to implement the plan is another which could affect the process and progress of the community.Its important for the city official to reach out the people in the community and to give them an understanding of how important is our environment to the city. The present encomic situation is what would have a great impact or obstacle in the city to obtain the funds need to make changes; but this where the community comes in and fund raisers are established to make our city environmental health. Introducing a clean environment healthy city would require information how important having a clean city is important to the community. A health city is about clean air, water, land and waste disposal for better living in the community.Understanding the air we breathe is essential that’s why green emission is established to reduce the amount of carbon that is leaked in to the air which can cause breathing issuing. Having clean water and plenty of water is a something our body cannot live without. Land is major because the quality of land effects food and the types of food in which we can choose from and eat. Land is different from place to place and each area yields certain kinds of food that is necessary for the nutrients we need. When our air, water and land is destroyed where do we go and how do we survive.Environmental Health should be a global concern because earth is our home. How far does this quotation sum up Priestleys aims and concerns in An Inspector Calls? Essay

‘We don’t live alone. We are members of one body. We are responsible for each other.’ How far does this quotation sum up Priestley’s aims and concerns in An Inspector Calls? Priestley’s aim in An Inspector Calls was to send out a message to the audience about the ways in which the upper and working class treated each other during the early to mid 20th century and the importance of the effects this brings about which leads to the matter of being responsible for each other and how we are all the same as individuals. The quotation strongly sums up his message which is particularly shown through the role of Inspector Goole because it is arguably thought that Priestley has used the Inspector’s character as an alter ego to express his socialist views against a family such as the wealthy Birlings, although characters such as Sheila and Eric Birling soon prove support towards Priestley’s views. By judging the character of Inspector Goole and the way he treats the Birlings, we as the audience learn that he is in fact not a Police Inspector, because his assertive and impatient manner isn’t what a wealthy middle class family or anybody would expect from him. For example, in Act 3 the Inspector says to Mr. Birling, ‘Don’t start on that. I want to get on,’ which implies he has no respect for them despite their social status and it also implies he is in hurry, but there is no reason for any Inspector to rush because usually he would take all the time he needed. It was also his foreknowledge of Eva Smith’s death which made us question who the Inspector really was in the play because since the Inspector came in to interrogate the Birlings, Eva had always been alive as Gerald had called up the infirmary asking about the death after the Inspector had left, ‘No girl has died in there today. They haven’t had a suicide for months.’ More importantly, it was the confidence in the way the Inspector talked and how much he knew about the death before which made it seem as if he knew that Eva was going to commit suicide. The Inspector could probably have supernatural powers or he could be from the future to avenge Eva’s death, but either way he is a very mysterious character. Therefore, it does not make a different what the Inspector was, because the main purpose of his role in the play is to make the Birling family realise their responsibilities in society by forcing them to confess their experiences when they disregard the need to think of others – â€Å"You have no hope of not discussing it, Mrs. Birling.† This is why he said in his last speech, â€Å"We are members of one body. We are responsible for each other.† It is Priestley’s way of warning the audience that there is a society in where we are all responsible for each other. Mr. Birling is a British conservative man and like Margaret Thatcher, he believes ‘there is no such thing as society,’ and this clearly opposes Priestley’s message. However, Priestley has used dramatic irony to create a negative first impression on Mr. Birling – â€Å"I say there isn’t a chance of war. The world’s developing so fast that it’ll make war impossible.† When we hear this as the audience, we learn that Mr. Birling is a fool who is not to be trusted as his opinions are very wrong, because the play is set in 1912 but it was first presented in 1946 so by then two world wars had occurred. From this, we can tell that Priestley wants the audience to have a low opinion of the Birlings and Capitalist politics because he believes that the society in which the Birlings represent is unfair and will lead to horrible conflicts. He has shown this by making the Birlings feel guilty and be at fault for the whole situation. This is why he downplays the roles of Mr. and Mrs. Birling and Gerald Croft because they are of the older generation who all share the same capitalist views in life, for example, Mrs. Birling does not accept any responsibility for Eva Smith – â€Å"I accept no blame for it all,† and this phrase brings out her stubbornness, ruthlessness and impertinence. None of the three particularly want to accept responsibility because they are afraid of a ‘public scandal’ which would result in a fall down the social ladder. We can tell because Gerald is continuously trying to prove the Inspector wrong – â€Å"don’t you see, there’s still no proof it was really the same girl. How do we know she was really Eva Smith or Daisy Renton?† Then Mr. and Mrs. Birling agree and so they continue to find reasons to back him up – â€Å"The whole damned thing can have been a piece of bluff.† These phrases represent how after the Inspector’s presence, they still have not learnt anything which gives an even more negative response from the audience because it shows they are so blinded by the wealthy life they live in. However, as the audience we can try to view them as ‘members of one body,’ because the Birlings are only classified as people in the upper class since they are wealthy and this is what concerns Priestley because if we take the title away we can view them as ordinary people with disagreeable personalities, so it makes no difference who they are. Priestley introduces Karl Marx’s theory through Eric and Sheila Birling, and the theory is about the ideal class where everybody is one and the same. This is more evident in the role of Sheila Birling because she changes and develops the most throughout the play into a type of person which Priestley hopes the majority would follow and understand. Firstly, when Sheila first described her time at Milwards & Co. with Eva Smith she said, â€Å"If they didn’t get rid of that girl, I’d never go near that place again.† This is an example of the type of action Priestley does not approve of because it illustrates how wealthy people think they can easily mistreat people like Eva Smith, particularly if it’s for minor reasons – she was â€Å"in a furious temper.† This is also Priestley’s way of saying to the audience that people who work in very minor jobs or are a lot poorer should still be treated with respect. Nevertheless, Sheila starts to recognise and regret her mistakes – â€Å"If I could help her now, I would/ I’ll never, never do it again to anybody.† This response is the same with Eric Birling who also realises that what he did to Eva was wrong – â€Å"It’s what happened to the girl and what we all did to her that matters.† This change of behaviour shows us that upper class people can change for the better which demonstrates how they are just like everybody else and this proves Priestley’s point in the quotation where ‘we are members of one body.’ After the Inspector left, we get the impression that Sheila is a lot more reasonable and mature than her parents and Gerald Croft, because they are not used to receiving anything but respect due to their way of living. To change things, Priestley has made Sheila and Eric become examples of the new emerging generation of a more social behaviour towards life, and this change is proven near the end of the play where Sheila talks back against her parents and takes back the respect she has given them – â€Å"I’m not being childish. If you want to know, it’s you two who are being childish – trying not to face the facts.† Like the Inspector, Sheila repeatedly reminds her family how they are responsible for people like Eva Smith – â€Å"Between us we drove that girl to commit suicide/ But that won’t bring Eva Smith back to life will it?† Priestley was a supporter of the Labour party, and he frequently made broadcasts on the radio about the merits of socialism which we can see are strongly reflected in this play. We can tell that Priestley’s concerns come across via the role of the Inspector because they both have the same point of view which is why the quotation ‘We don’t live alone. We are members of one body. We are responsible for each other,’ sums up his message. He does not tell us who the Inspector is but I believe Priestley did this intently so that the audience could be the judge and reach their own conclusions about his identity. He has proved it possible through characters such as Sheila Birling that people can change to fit in. Priestley’s concerns are even relevant in today’s society where there are still people who need to be aware of their behaviour towards others around them which therefore, is concluded by the quotation from the Inspector’s last speech.

Beneath the cartoon is a dialogue box which illustrates what is happening in the picture explaining that the Major General is saying that there are three essential differences between the rehearsal and the real thing. This is a quote take from the extract including the main punch line and explanation of the cartoon; There are three essential differences. First, the absence of the enemy. Now (turning to the Regimental Sergeant-Major) what is the second difference? The absence of the General, Sir. This suggests that the British magazines view of soldiers attitudes towards their Generals was that they felt abandoned and unjust because the commanders wont be joining them in battle, but also that the man expects that their commanders not to be in an attack with them. The purpose of the cartoon was to show and give the message to the British public about the attitudes of British soldiers. : This source is not very useful to a historian studying attitudes of British soldiers to their commanders during the First World War because it is form a British magazine and not is not an actual written reference. Source B is from the TV show Blackadder Goes Forth from the BBC. It tells us that the character Captain Blackadder is sarcastically telling his fellow men about what is going to happen to them. He says that the General Insanity Melchitt invites them to a mass slaughter. This shows that Captain Blackadder feels that the General is insane in sending them out to battle which will ultimately end up in death. Also it quotes Were going over the top after sitting here since Christmas 1914, during which millions of men have died and weve advanced no further than an asthmatic ant carrying some heavy shopping. This suggests that the soldiers attitude (in this case Captain Blackadder) towards their commander is that he feels that the war is pointless and they havent moved anywhere at all due to the Generals decision making. It uses this language and context because it is taken from a comedy programme about the First World War. The purpose of the programme and the extract was to show the attitudes of soldiers in the First World War towards their commanders in a comical way. This source is quite useful to a historian studying attitudes of British soldiers to their commanders during the First World War because it is from a trusted and well known and respected source in Britain (The BBC). On the other hand it has fictional context and is supposed to be a comedy show which probably exaggerates the truth and is sarcastic. Source C is from a quote in the newspaper, The Daily Telegraph, November 1998 written by the son of Field Marshal General Haig, Earl Haig. It tells us that Earl thinks its time that his father should be praised and given credit for his role and job and the victories he achieved in the First World War. It says that he thinks he was one of the greatest men in the twentieth century and not a callous, uncaring man when in fact he was a very humane man. He also says When the old soldiers who fought in the war were alive, I never heard a word of criticism from them. It is in more recent times that it has come. This tells us that he heard that nothing was said about his father until more recent times instead of from the people who were actually in the war. This shows its problems because people might have lied to him and agreeing with him that his father was doing the right thing. It then later says that many of the people who pour scorn his father and the way of the war dont know the first thing about it and that serious historians are now coming to the view that the war had to be fought to end it. This suggests that he thinks that historians now know why it had to be fought that way and people cannot judge what happened without strong evidence that they do. The message he is trying to put across is that his father did the right thing and if historians want to know the real views about soldiers attitudes towards their commanders, they should listen to him because he is his son and has heard from people who fought in the war there views on his father. This source is very useful to a historian studying the attitudes of British soldiers to their commanders during the First World War because it is from a respect broadsheet newspaper and is an extract from General Haigs son. This helps because obviously General Haigs son would know a lot more about his won fathers characteristics and ideas more than most people. It has lots of dialogue and is a serious account. It actually states about the soldiers views and attitudes towards their commanders. However it is slightly biased because it is written by General Haigs son, which does mean that his son could be backing up and supporting his father and possibly lying to the newspaper in order to back up his father, who he respects. In conclusion, sources A to C are useful to a historian studying the attitudes of soldiers to their commanders in World War One because they all show in some way, the views of soldiers on their commanders. Source C is most useful to a historian because it is the most reliable source out of the 3 and contains more facts than the other two. Source A is limited to historians because it is a picture with speech written underneath about one persons view on soldiers attitudes towards their commanders. They all have uses to historians as they are all very different and can all be used for historians studying the attitudes of soldiers to their commanders in World War One. 2) General Douglas Haig was Britains commander-in-chief during the Somme battle and took much criticism for the sheer loss of life in this battle. He put his belief into one final mighty push against the Germans to be destroyed in the Somme region of France. The French had been asking for some form of military assistance from the British to help them in their battle with the Germans at Verdun, and so Haig had helped them, thus helping to win World War One. However different people think different things about General Haig. Some think that he was a skilled soldier like John Keegan whereas others think Haig was reluctant to the consequences of his battle tactics. People criticize him for his belief in the simple advance of infantry troops on enemy lines, which included the loss of 20,000 allied soldiers killed on day one and 40,000 injured making it the bloodiest day in British military history. Source C is an extract from the British broadsheet newspaper, The Daily Telegraph and was written in November 1998, by the son of Field Marshal General Haig, Earl Haig. It is still quite useful though as it does entirely back John Keegans view on General Haig because it shows that people who fought in the war never criticised General Haig and it is in more modern times people believe that General Haig was a bad person in the world of the British military. Source D is a poster which is called Your Country Needs Me taken from the book General Haigs Private War. It shows a caricature of General Haig pointing towards himself mimicking the famous poster of Lord Kitchener and Uncle Sam pointing at the person reading it. The poster has the words Your Country needs me l like a hole in the head which is what most of you are going to get. The word me is in very large bold letters compared to the other ones to get the point of the poster across to the person viewing it. This suggests that the person who made it believes that General Haig should not be the commander-in-chief for the British army during that point in time because he is leading them towards death and is a mocking General Haig in doing so. It shows us this by General Haig pointing at himself and using the phrase like a hole in the head which is what most of you are going to get showing that the person who drew this poster believes that if you joined General Haig you will almost certainly die. This source therefore does not support Keegans interpretations of Haig. However, this source is not entirely reliable because again it is a one-sided point of view and is produced in a way that is rebellious, comical way which mocks General Haig. Although it is still quite useful because it shows what other peoples views are about General Haig, giving another side to the story. Source E is three different extracts form Haigs diary showing his own view on the Battle of The Somme and trench warfare. It tells us Haigs views prior to the Battle of the Somme, the day before the Battle of the Somme and the day of the Battle of the Somme. Haigs view in the first extract written prior to the Battle of the Somme in June 1916 is very realistic which says things like The nation must be taught to bear losses and The nation must be prepared to see heavy casualty lists. This suggests that Haig knew what will happen on the day of the Battle of the Somme, and that it will be a day in which Britain will lose many lives informing people that they should be prepared for what is about to happen. The second extract written on 30th June 1916, the day before the attack began is a very reassuring and generally good message about the soldiers welfare and mind state. It says The men are in splendid spirit and The barbed wire has never been so well cut nor the artillery preparation so thorough. This suggests Haig is full of confidence and believes he is doing the right thing because of the things soldiers have said about him and has been done in preparation. It gives this impression also by the language and context used in the extract. The final third extract written on the 1st of July 1916, the day of the Battle of the Somme is quite unreliable because it shows almost what is a frightened message written in denial of what is happening. The extract says that the attack was very successful and everything went like clockwork. This shows some truth because the attack was successful but was also the worst and bloodiest day in British military history and all did definitely not go like clockwork due to the extreme levels of death and what could be said poor battle tactics. It also says Our troops are in wonderful spirits and full of confidence. That phrase is very unreliable because General Haig wasnt even there, therefore he would not know about the soldiers feelings. This source therefore does support Keegans interpretation of Haig. However, this source is not entirely reliable because it is all written by General Haig himself and in most cases he will be one-sided to support his ideas and the consequences of them, whether the outcome is bad or good. The source does have limited information because General Haig wasnt there and cannot give a full image and brief of what really is going on. It is still very useful though for John Keegan to back up his interpretations of General Haig as it is written by the man himself, also it gives reliable information like those realistic points of view in the first extract. Source F is from Great Battles of World War 1, written by a modern historian, Anthony Livesey, published in 1989. It tells us about how General Haig was silent, humourless and reserved but also was shrewd, ambitious and had great self confidence. It says Perhaps his greatest failing was his constant, often misplaced optimism, which seemed to stem from his belief that he had been chosen by God to serve his country. This shows us that Livesey only wants to suggest his ideas about Haig as a military commander and places ideas about why Haig chose to battle the way he did, and why he never seemed to give up hope. The last sentence It was probably this inability to recognise defeat that led to his continuing attacks on the Somme and Passchendaele, tells us that Livesey has a clear guess at why Haig would continue the attacking in places like Somme to end the war. Overall it is giving both sides of the argument and gives the point of view from a modern historian. This source therefore does and does not support Keegans interpretation of Haig. However, this source is not entirely reliable because these are all probable ideas from one man, and they are his conclusions as of what Haig was and why he did things in the way he did. It is still quite useful though as it does support Keegans interpretations in some ways, but justifies reasons why Haig did things with his misplaced optimism and inability to recognise defeat. This affects the way Keegans interpretations of Haig by downgrading the reasons for Haigs actions. Source G is from the War Memoirs of David Lloyd George, published after the war and written by the British Prime Minister David Lloyd George. It tells us that Lloyd George tried to shift the blame over to Haig. It also tells us about the pride he has for his people The tale of these battles s the story of the million who would rather die than call themselves cowards even to themselves. This suggests that he is proud to be part of a nation where millions of British people would rather die than call themselves and there nation cowards. The source is very anti Haig/General in the sense that he says and also the two or three individuals who would rather the million perish than they as leaders should admit, that they were blunderers. And My only justification is that Haig promised not to press attack if it became clear that he could not attain his objectives by continuing the offensive. This suggests that he is trying to shift the blame of the tragedies of the war as Prime Minister over to the leaders of the military, in particular, General Haig. This source therefore does not support Keegans interpretation of Haig. However this source is not entirely reliable because it is written by the British Prime Minister who obviously does not want to make himself look bad and a disgrace to the country, willing enough to blame it on someone else if needs be. It is still quite useful though as it provides the thoughts of the leader of the country and gives some amount of evidence against Keegans interpretations. Source H is an extract from the official biography Haig, by Duff Cooper. Cooper was asked by Haigs family to write this book. It tells us that there can surely be only one opinion which is, if Haig refused to fight then it would of meant the abandonment of Verdun to its fate and the breakdown of co-operation with the French. This suggests that Cooper thinks that Haig had to give battle on Somme and that it is the only opinion of Haig and the Battle of the Somme. This source therefore does support Keegans interpretation of Haig. However, this source is not entirely reliable because Cooper may be linked to the Haig family if they asked him to write it, because of his views on Haig and the battles he commanded, showing that the source is slightly biased. It is still quite useful though as it is positive evidence towards John Keegans interpretations and it is also reliable because it is from the official biography of General Haig, which gives yet another view about Haigs actions. Source J is from The Times, a well known British broadsheet newspaper. It was written on the 10th May 1917 (after the Somme) and contains a one column article from the Rheinisch Westfalische Zeitung which is a German newspaper. It tells us that it is a German tribute to Sir D. Haig. This source is very pro German and constantly but discretely tries to offend Great Britain, and England in particular. It says Field-Marshal Haig is certainly one of the ablest generals of contemporary England, and like the majority of able Britons is of Scottish descent, by saying that the writer is saying that more able British people are usually Scottish, and not English. This is an example of the Germans offending the English by saying Scotland is more superior. Also it says that he is apparently the best man Great Britain has to set against her enemies, but his energy and eagerness to attack have not proved equal to the German art of defence will certainly make all of Germany very satisfied. This suggests that the British do not have anything to offer that is as good as the German defence making the German people happy because they are suggested better than the British. This source therefore does not support Keegans interpretation of Haig. However, this source is not entirely reliable because it is written by Germans who will not diminish their country and will make out that the British have nothing worthy against them. It is still quite useful; though as it gives a German point of view and shows what Germany think about Haig, instead of just British points of view. Source K is from an article by S. Warburton published in Hindsight: GCSE Modern History review in April 1998. It shows us a balanced account of Haig and clearly showing both sides of the arguments; was Haig ultimately, victorious or did he make a mistake by taking battle on the Somme. It also states that Haig should not be blamed for the failings of the British war efforts, because it puts too much of a burden of guilt on one man, meaning that Warburton feels that Haig was wrongfully accused of the British military failings. It says Haig was the product of his time, of his upbringing, education, training and previous military experience. On argument goes that he was, ultimately, victorious and, even if he had been replaced, would there have been anyone better for the job? This suggests to us that Warburton thinks that Haig was brought up the right way during his time and shows one side of the argument but also hinting that he feels was there really anyone better for the job. This source therefore does support Keegans interpretation of Haig. However, this source is not entirely reliable because it was published in 1998, whereas there is more sufficient evidence in present day. It is still very useful though as it is written for a GCSE Modern History review book, written by a historian which gives a sense of trust and factual evidence towards Keegans interpretations. Source L is an extract from General Haigs Special Order Of The Day which was issued to every member in the British Armed Forces and written. It tells us about what is expected and what every soldier must follow. It says Victory will belong to the side that holds out the longest. There is no other course open but to fight it out. Every position must be held to the last man. There must be no retirement. With our backs to the wall and believing in the justice of our cause each one of us must fight on to the end. This strongly suggests that General Haig thought that victory will only be received, if the British stuck it out the longest even though there would be many deaths and casualties, there must be no giving up, or backing out and that every man shall hold every position and fight to the end until the enemy is destroyed. This source therefore does support Keegans interpretation of Haig. However, this source is not entirely reliable because it was written by General Haig and therefore biased and was also issued after the bloodiest day in history, the Battle of the Somme. It is still very useful though as it a written document issued to every member in the British Armed Forces by General Haig. This supports Keegan because it is sufficient evidence to back up his interpretations. In conclusion, sources C to L do provide sufficient evidence to support John Keegans statement that Haig was a highly skilled soldier. Throughout the sources more of them give evidence to back up Keegans interpretations than go against them. Most of the sources do support Keegans interpretations because they are written by people involved with Haig or historians. For instance, the quote Haig was the product of his time, of his upbringing, education, training and previous military experience. On argument goes that he was, ultimately, victorious and, even if he had been replaced, would there have been anyone better for the job? , is written by a modern historian in a book which informs students at GCSE level about General Haig, and does ultimately support John Keegans interpretations.

I just remember that as I was too young and was unable to walk and they had to carry me and bring me over to their place. Getting married at an early age, I was destined to suffer a lot of hardships. I had to carry water in a small clay-pot in the mornings. I had to sweep and swap the floor every day. Those were the days when I wanted to eat good food and wear pretty clothes. I used to feel very hungry, but I had to be satisfied with the amount of food that I was provided. I never got to eat enough. I sometimes secretly ate corns, soybeans, etc that used to grow in the field. And if I was caught eating, my in-laws and husband would beat me up accusing me of stealing from the field and eating. Sometimes the villagers used to give me food and if my husband and in-laws found out, they used to beat me up accusing me of stealing food from the house. They used to give me one black blouse and a cotton sari torn into two pieces. I had to wear these for two years. Never did I get other accessories like petticoats, belts etc. When my saris got torn, I used to patch them up and continue wearing them. My husband married three times after me. At present, he lives with his youngest wife. Since I married at an early age, early child-delivery was inevitable. As a result, I now have severe back problems. I used to weep a lot and consequently, I faced problems with my eyes and had to undergo an eye operation. I often think that if I had the power to think like I do now, I would never go to that house. I also wish I had not given birth to any children. Retrospective sufferings make me wish not to see my husband again. Nevertheless, I do not want him to die because I dont want to lose my marital status.

The unfortunate thing about this is that the book series has poor representations of Native Americans. Should one just merely consider this to be a product of its time and ignore the stereotyping which takes place? The moved out to the prairie to claim a piece of land that the government was giving out. Of course, this was land that native tribes already belonged to. The tribe that is specifically encountered in the book, the Osages, are not considered to really be occupying the land, and therefore it was alright to simply give it away. Even worse, as the family has just taken a plot of land that used to be utilized by the Osages, the Osages are simply regarded as dangerous, strange, a threat, and menacing: â€Å"Laura was frightened. Jack had never growled at her before. Then she looked over her shoulder, where Jack was looking, and she saw two naked, wild men coming, one behind the other, on the Indian trail† (134). This is the sort of portrayal that leads children to simply think of Native Americans as being uncivilized, when in fact every tribe had very spe cific ways of living in harmony with the land. The new inventions were affordable for the rich and the poor so everyone could enjoy going on journeys. The education in Victorian Britain has changed by many children and adults would now get a good education. The education for children is free with no charge this will led to the children having a better future, with more jobs and more money. The education has many new developments which are in 1870 children aged 5 to 13 were expected to attend school for free from Monday to Sunday. Then by 1883 children were expected to have two hours of school everyday, this is good because the children in Victorian Britain will be able to make new inventions in the future because of their education now. In my opinion the impact of these changes of children being able to work for free is it will make them cleverer and they will have better knowledge the improve life in Victorian Britain and life now. But the most significant change is children were expected to have two hours of education everyday because that is fourteen hours a week of education. The amount of hours that children are educated has impacted on our education today. The negative points about the education are the lessons were boring because the children only copied of the board and did not learn anything. The lessons need to be more fun to make the children more interested in learning. If they misbehaved or they did not understand the teachers would be punished the children by whipping them or hurting them by getting the cane out. I my opinion the children’s education was better because the children are given the chance to learn and with the knowledge they learn they can led to better jobs and more money in the future. By the children being educated for free it stops the children from working in the factories which causes many deaths. So there is a greater population of children in Victorian Britain. The working conditions in Victorian Britain have changed by the children’s health and safety in the factories. There were many injures and many deaths. But the main change was how many hours everybody worked. The working conditions in 1832 changed by children aged 9 were banned from working whilst children aged 13 could not be made to work more than 9 hours a day. Then by 1847 there was a maximum of 10 hours a day for women under 18 and children aged 13 were no longer allowed to work more than thirty hours a week. Then in 1871 workers were allowed trade unions which allowed the people to gain more money. In the early 19th century a man called William Wilberforce helped bring an end to slavery in Britain. In my opinion the impact of these changes are the children’s working conditions because throughout the years the children’s health and safety has changed because in the 18th century the working conditions the very bad and there would be many injures and deaths of children. The most significant change is the amount of hours everyone worked because the hours have decreased massively even though woman are still being paid as much as they were before. The negative points on the working conditions are in 1820 children were forced to work from Monday to Saturday for 12 hours and 6 hours on Sunday. This means they would work 78 hours a week and still not make any money from what they did. That same year in 1820 40% of the people who worked suffered from injures, poor health and safety. Then in 1842 conditions in coal mines were terrible. Something had to be done so the people in Victorian Britain called for change. Mining was profitable but the owners provided very little protection for their workers; there were over 1000 deaths every year. People who worked in factories were not paid very well. The owners would pay the workers with tokens that were not very valuable, these tokens were only allowed to be spent in the factory shops which there weren’t many off anyway. In my opinion it made life worse because of the working conditions in the factories. People had to work because they were poor and needed money but if they were only being paid with non valuable tokens then the workers are not being treated fairly. Also the workers were putting their lives at risk by working in the factories or by working in coal mines this could lower the population of Victorian Britain. The hygiene in Victorian Britain has developed by the nurses and doctors wore cleaner clothing and small pox cure was invented. There was a new sterilisation room and more medicines were available. There were cleaner water supplies and the reinforcement on the sewers helped the whole of Britain. The impact of hygiene and living conditions has changed by the nurses and doctors wore cleaner clothing this means their cloths do not carry as much dirt and germs as they did before. The small pox cure was a big impact of change because the illness, small pox, has caused many deaths which have decreased the population in Victorian Britain but the new invention of the cure for small pox will cause fewer deaths. The new sterilisation room and the greater verity of medicines meant people could be worked on and have a greater chance of living from the new medicines such as Anaesthetic and Antiseptic was introduced in the mid 19th century. But the most significant change is the cleaner water supplies and the reinforcements on the sewers, because with the cleaner water there would be fewer illnesses caused and more people would drink less beer and have the cleaner water instead. As for the reinforcements on the sewers, the sewers will not be as weak as they were and the sewage won’t flood into people’s houses or cause any illnesses. With less sewage around Britain, Victorian Britain will be a lot more hygienic city. People who benefited from these changes are all the people in Britain because the improvements were open to anyone in Britain may they be rich or poor. The new hygienic ways was meant for everyone there was no one who genially suffered from the changes. In my opinion the hygiene and living conditions have been better for Britain because the death rates lowered by 60% due to hygiene and 40% of the people who suffered from the hygiene were strong enough to join the army. So the hygiene has improved significantly in Victorian Britain. The entertainment in Victorian Britain has changed by there is a bigger variety for people to choose an entertainment. The entertainment changed significantly over the 19th century. In 1824 blood sport was banned so there would be less deaths and more entertainment in Britain. That same year in 1824 the first public bath came out. This meant people could be cleaner and enjoy meeting friend and socialising more. Then in 1835 the first camera came out, this brought huge amount of entertainment to the people in Britain and everywhere else around the world. In the 1840’s the train was the new biggest transport. This brought new experiences and it was a more entertaining way to travel and go on holidays. In my opinion the impact of these changes are there is a bigger variety for the people to choose an entertainment. People socialise more with each other and made friends with a lot more people. By the new entertainments people got more exercise by going to the baths or on the trains, by doing this the people of Victorian Britain will live a longer and more entertained life. But I believe the most significant change was the variety of new sports that people could watch or do themselves. The negative point is that for entertainment people went down to the pub and would drink too much beer and end up being drunk. This is because the landlords put salt in the food and the beer so people would get thirsty and drink more then they would get drunk. When they are drunk they cause violence and glass bottles would be thrown at them for being drunk. This could cause death or injures. In my opinion it made life better for Britain because the entertainment now is the same as it was in the 19th century. In Victorian Britain this is where it all started too led to the entertainment we have now in the 21st century. The most significant thing that made the entertainment change was the stop to blood sport and violence for entertainment instead the people of Victorian Britain began to love animals and use them for their own entertainment. The diet in Victorian Britain has changed by improvement of the quality of food because of inspectors. This means the people will live longer lives because of the food they ate. There will be less disease going around because of the people in Victorian Britain’s diet. In 1824 a man called John Cadbury opened a shop which sold drinking chocolate which it better than drinking beer and alcohol. Then by the 19th century John Cadbury sold his chocolate in bars to eat which was one of the biggest sold items on the market. In my opinion the impact of these changes has improved the quality of food because the people of Victorian Britain get to taste new flavour which healthier food. But the most significant change was the new inspectors that can round to look at all the food that was being made in the factories, to see if it was safe and healthy to eat. By the inspectors coming round this meant there would be less diseases because the food should be good to eat. The negative points of the diet are the healthier the people are the more they are made to work because the stronger they are. Also the working class of food could not afford to bring in new healthier food so they were still unhealthy and the people of Victorian Britain were not getting a healthy diet. This led to diseases still being caused but because of the new transport the food was getting better and not rooting. In my opinion the diet was better because less people were drunk because of the new drinking chocolate and people would get addicted to the chocolate so it did not cause problems. Food businesses grew bigger making new foods and more affordable food that will still taste as good for the people in Victorian Britain. My conclusion is in Victorian Britain people have changed significantly in all the factors. But the main factor that has changed Victorian Britain is the transport because I believe it is the biggest factor of the industrial revolution. The transport has linked up all of the factors, the transport is part of the entertainment because the people get to see new places and have more experiences. The transport links with the diet because if the food does not come over quick enough then in will rot. The transport and the working conditions because the working conditions on the train were terrible and people died from the poisonous fumes and people need to get to work fast then they should take a faster transport. The transport links with the hygiene because if someone was to be rushed of to the sterilisation room then they would take the fast transport to get there. The transport lastly links in with the education because the children need to get to school so they could take the train to get there. These entire factors link in with the transported so I think this is the most improved Victorian Britain.
